How the Golden Boot is calculated
The award's real formula: points = goals × league coefficient, where the coefficient is ×2 for the five highest-ranked UEFA leagues, ×1.5 for those ranked 6th to 21st, and ×1 for the rest. Only European top flights count.
One thing worth knowing mid-season: Nordic leagues run spring-to-autumn, so by October they are nearly finished while the big five have barely started. The table reflects that, exactly as the real award does.
How the IIG is calculated
The IIG (Goal Impact Index) is the only number on this site that we make up ourselves, so here is the whole formula:
IIG = (goals + assists) × 90 ÷ minutes × league coefficient
It answers what neither goals nor assists answer on their own: how much this player weighs on his team's goals for every spell he spends on the pitch, and against what level of opposition. Three decisions explain it:
- Per 90 minutes, not per game. A substitute who scores in twenty minutes cannot show the same average as a starter who plays the full ninety.
- Goals and assists count the same. The pass that leaves the goal made is worth as much as tapping it in: both are direct involvement.
- The coefficient is the Golden Shoe's, which comes from UEFA's association coefficient — not FIFA's, which ranks national teams, not leagues. ×2 for the top five, ×1.5 from 6th to 21st, ×1 for the rest. We use that one and no other so the site does not carry two different scales of "how hard is this league".
450-minute floor. Below five full games it is not computed and a dash is shown. Without that floor, anyone with one goal in twenty minutes would top the table on a rate that cannot hold.
For reference: half the players with enough minutes sit below 0.25; from 2.00 up is elite, and the season leader is around 4.5.
What the "rating" is, and why it is not ours
The rating shown in the midfielder, defender and goalkeeper tables is the average match rating computed by API-Football, on a 0-10 scale where 6 is an average game. Their algorithm derives it from in-match actions — passes, duels, shots, errors — and the weights are not published: it is third-party data shown as-is, not a calculation of ours.
We keep it because a centre-back or a goalkeeper cannot be measured by goals, and no better public alternative exists. But it should be read for what it is: an opaque estimate, useful for comparison, not a truth.
Known limitations
- A player who changes club mid-season appears under the competition where they have the most minutes.
- League names repeat across countries (three "Super League", two "Bundesliga"), so leagues are identified internally by numeric code, never by name.
- No lower-division or youth football data is published.
